We’re currently enjoying our Summer holiday break but you can see from the photos how much all 19 children enjoyed their Olympic themed Sports Day plus ‘India Day’ at Stoke Goldington CE First School.
The children donned traditional Indian costumes and learned Bollywood dancing during ‘India Day,’ inspired through their learning about different countries competing in the Olympics. A parent kindly arranged for a Bollywood dancer to visit the School to teach them for a morning. The children loved dressing up in ornate saris and were fascinated to learn various dance routines, encouraged by the unusual music and moves.
Mrs. Kelly, who arranged the dance visit, cooked a mouthwatering array of Indian food for the children to try, including tasty savoury samosas and galab jaman, a dessert of deep fried dough balls with sugar syrup often eaten at festivals or celebrations. Most of the children tried all the foods, some loving them with others finding the spices and sweet pudding a bit overwhelming for the palate – the teachers loved them though!
The Olympic theme also inspired a week of healthy eating studies and the children were able to bring in their very owned packed lunch ‘fit for an athlete!’ They learned which types of food are best for peak fitness and energy and were pleased to describe items from their ‘power-packed’ lunches to their teachers across all the age range 4-7.
The Learning Ladybirds in Years 1 and 2 were excited when a brand new interactive whiteboard was installed in their classroom. Featuring the latest technology, the whiteboard enables learning ‘at the touch of a finger’ with teachers and children able to experience all sorts of interactive facilities on this brand new multimedia platform. Another whiteboard was installed only recently in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) classroom and has been hugely successful in the children’s learning. Typically, the children are almost quicker than the teachers to navigate their way around this type of latest technology!
Autumn term kicks off on Wednesday 5th September with 9 children starting in EYFS plus two children joining Years 1 and 2, bringing our School register to 25 in total. What a fantastic start for our new entrants! Their transition from Stoke Goldington Pre-School and other settings was really detailed and successful at the end of last term so they join the EYFS classroom familiar with their surroundings and ready to adapt to a full School day. The EYFS curriculum allows for child-initiated activities to thrive and the children are very much encouraged individually with their progress and learning.
