Over the years since the club closed there have been many rumours and very few facts about what is going to become of the unionist club in St. Johns Street Newport Pagnell. It was rumoured is was going to become a place of worship, a private home and even a night club. The only facts that ever surfaced were those in the planning application made by JD Wetherspoons. That planning application was approved by the council and then everything went quiet again. The unionist club remained empty and looked more and more rundown as the months passed.
In the last few weeks how ever the to let sign has come down and building work has started at the rear and inside the Grade II listed building. We have been told that it isn’t JD Wetherspoons that are doing the work but it is instead to become a venue for Indian weddings with a capacity of 200 – 300 people. Quite where that many wedding guests will park when they wish to attend the venue is anyone guess.
Wondering if this was true some enquiries were made. We can have been told that the people working on the venue believe it will be an Indian restaurant with a bollywood style cocktail bar capable of hosting around 200 covers. It will serve traditional indian food not the usual Indian inspired food that most takeaway’s sell.
When contacted to ask about the change in use from pub to restaurant / cocktail bar Newport Pagnell Town Council planning committee were totally unaware of what was happening. Milton Keynes council planning team had no idea and neither did Milton Keynes Council Business rates team.
